The Light Machine — FAAP Moda

01. The Project

A scenography for the FAAP Moda graduation show, thought of as a gift from the studio to the graduating class. A graduation runway is not one collection. It is twenty different ones, each with its own language, walking down the same floor on the same night. Any set with a strong aesthetic of its own ends up speaking over most of them.

So the question was not what the runway should look like. It was how to give every student a stage that belongs to their work, without building twenty sets.

02. What Was Left Out

An earlier direction stacked the university's own classroom chairs into towers along the runway. It made a strong image, but for a real gift to a real school, a wall of stacked chairs next to a full audience is a structural risk with no reason to exist. It was dropped. The hall stays almost untouched.

03. The Structure

A single installation of slim, lightweight LED bars, suspended on certified safety cables, forms a low artificial ceiling over the runway. The bars are both vertical and horizontal, crossing in a loose grid that runs the length of the hall.

The rule is simple: the structure never moves and never changes. Every bar stays in exactly the same place from the first look to the last. What changes is only what the bars do.

04. One Structure, Many Shows

Each collection gets its own light programme. One show lights only the horizontals, and the ceiling turns calm and architectural. Another lights only the verticals, sharp and graphic. One is all red. One pulses. One runs a sequence down the hall that follows the model. One adds projection onto the walls. One dims almost to nothing, leaving silhouette and form. The bars that are off are still there, visible, waiting.

The clothes lead. The light answers the collection, never the other way around. The set does not impose a single look on work that is completely different. It is not decoration given to the students. It is infrastructure for presenting their own work.

05. The Final Look

At the end, for the first time, every bar comes on at once. The whole class walks together under the full grid, and twenty separate programmes resolve into a single composition.
